Kindle vs iPad – Which one is the better device? Should I buy an iPad or a Kindle?

Before spending your money on any of these gadgets, read along as I introduce you to the facts straight on iPad versus Kindle.

    Kindle vs iPad Comparison:

    1. Price: Kindle costs $260 (Kindle DX is $490) while iPad costs around $500 – $630

    2. Battery Life: Kindle can last up to 2 weeks while iPad can last only up to 12 hours

    3. Size: Kindle is smaller and lets you read with one hand; iPad is slightly larger because of a bigger screen, enabling 2-page viewing as if you were reading a real book.

    4. Weight: Kindle is more lightweight and travel-friendly at 10.2 ounces; iPad weighs almost 1.5 lbs.

    5. Capacity / Contents: Kindle has a selection of 450,000 e-books while iPad has only 60,000

    6. Reading Full-sized Magazines and Journals: Kindle has a size large enough for reading The Times, Reader’s Digest, New York Times, etc; not so even with a Kindle for iPad.

    7. Note Taking: They both have a note taking function.

    8. Touch Screen: Kindle is not a touch screen; iPad is a touch screen.

    9. Night-reading and backlight: Kindle works nicely for night-reading; iPad has a backlight computer screen that may cause glare and eye strain when reading at night.

    10. Reading in direct sunlight: Because of its electronic ink, you can read in the sunlight with Kindle; not so much with an iPad.

    11. Free Internet: You get a free internet access if you buy Kindle in the US; not a feature for iPads.

    12. Computer-like Functions: Kindle doesn’t work like a computer; iPad is able to do web-browsing, game playing, and email sending.

    13. Text to Speech: Both have text-to-speech or audio reading ability.

    14. Apps: You can use apps in both.

Conclusion / The Verdict between Kindle vs iPad:

As an E-Reader, Amazon Kindle is superior. As an all-around gadget, Apple iPad scores higher.

Kindle is for the avid reader; iPad – for the internet buff.

    Bob D Williams asked:

Apple iPad, the product which is just launched, is considered by many as a threat to the Amazon’s Kindle and time only will decide which dominates the market. Based on the purpose for which the two devices have been designed, we must say that both are equally good. But there are some basic differences between iPad and Kindle, which the users need to understand.

So far, the market has been dominated by Amazon and now the announcement of the launch of the new mini device by Apple will certainly will be a threat to Kindle. IPad gains some advantages as it has been designed exclusively for the end user and looks colorful and great. The touch screen and similar functionalities of iPad cannot be compared with the old fashioned Kindle having a black and white screen and less interactive features.

While exploring the features of both Kindle and iPad, it can be seen that iPad has the powerful browser, Safari, equipped with it. Kindle, on the other hand, serves as an e book reader with a simple browser which is quite incompetent of offering the features of functions of Apple Safari.

As far as the battery power is concerned, Kindle excels the Apple iPad. The iPad, with its backlight display consumes more power when the Kindle uses very less battery power, considering the minimal power needed each time the page loads.

The Kindle app comes free for the iPad and this gives a greater selection of books for the iPad users. The iPad owners can access the library of both Amazon and Apple before making the decision to purchase a book. Here, Kindle offers the users only limited access through the Amazon store, but still the deliverability cannot be deemed inferior to that of iPad.

iPad supports the ePub format, which in turn is compatible with numerous devices, while in Kindle, the books can be read only on a limited number of Amazon products.

Another factor that gives advantage to the iPad users is the presence of a feature-rich email client and the different views available in the iPad-portrait and landscape. The touch screen enables the users to do most of the tricks with the finger tips. The clarity of the iPad screen and the wide angled view are features that are specific to the Apple product. The clarity and the precision with which the photos can be viewed in iPad are far superior to Kindle, which handles photos in black and white resolution.

Rather than being confined as an e book reader like the Kindle, iPad offers a lot of facilities, including the ability to store and organize the multimedia files. iPad supports multimedia in all formats and this makes it a pleasurable experience for the user who enjoys the music and videos stored in the device. Moreover, the storage space in iPad is almost double the size of that available in Kindle.

The iPad prices start at $499, but when the usability and the thousands of apps are taken in to consideration, the price is just reasonable, even though a little higher than Amazon’s Kindle.

The bottom line is that if you are exclusively looking for a simple e book reader, Kindle may serve the purpose; but if you wish to possess an advanced equipment with additional features, iPad is the best option. So just like the way iPod became popular, apple iPad may conquer the electronic world in near future with its glistening looks and amazing features.

  • iPad Reviews – Should I Buy An iPad?

Posted on February 24th, 2011 No comments
    Marin M. asked:

You must have read a lot of good Apple iPad reviews to lead you to the decision to buy an iPad.

But before you finally dive into spending your hard-earned $500, it would be better if you also read some negative iPad reviews. This is not to discourage you though. Just like most iPad reviews, this review only aims to guide you towards knowing the limitations of iPad. If you think that these limitations still won’t affect your needs for an iPad, then all the better.

    Good and Bad iPad Reviews:

First, we might need to define “What is an iPad.” In simple terms, an iPad is a tablet computer.

It is a mobile computer that is multi-touched, and is meant to be the iPhone’s most superior version. If you own an iPhone, then owning an iPad next would be going to the next level for you.

Most people like the iPad’s reliability and ease of use.

Most positive iPad reviews will center on iPad’s being quick to start up, iPad lasts longer than netbooks, making it more reliable. It’s battery lasts up to 10 hours while most netbooks only last 3 hours or so.

In addition, iPad compared to netbooks is way faster, getting your task done quicker. You can also instantly browse through and use thousands of apps meant only for iPad. No need for long software installations.

iPad is also compatible with iTunes and Netflix, providing all your entertainment you need.

iPad even makes for a great ebook reader, now with its iPad Kindle and VoiceOver text-to-speech feature. iPad also offers a two-page viewing for ebook readers – much like as you would when reading a real book.

iPad is also one of the most stylish gadgets in the market today. It’s made of aluminum and not of cheap plastic like what most netbooks are made of. Not to mention this aluminum type of covering also adds to iPad’s durability.

Adding to iPad’s fanciness is that it is touch screen. You’ll certainly feel techie-er with an iPad.

Lastly, iPad’s screen is flippable – You can view the screen horizontally or vertically depending on what you’re viewing. It simply offers the best viewing angle no matter what size of app you are reading.

Now iPad is generally a classy gadget and a must-have for gadget collectors; but while it has a lot of great advantages, it has a few little cons as well.

Here are some of iPad’s known limitations:

First, you cannot watch flash player clips or videos with an iPad. Camera fanatics would also be disappointed because iPad doesn’t have any faculties for camera. If you’re also a frequent caller or texter, you also can’t use iPad because it can’t make calls to ordinary phones as well as can’t send SMS messages.

Should I buy an iPad? – absolutely yes, if you find the above limitations minor, and find iPad’s pros outweighing the cons in all the iPad reviews you read.

  • Apple iPad Vs Kindle – How Does Apple’s New iPad Compare?

Posted on January 28th, 2011 No comments
    Bob D Williams asked:

Apple iPad is something new with much anticipation from most reviews. One of the target areas is it will be a replacement for the Kindle reader, and your phone. With this in mind apple is hoping to create a space for the iPad between your smart phone and your home computer.

The iPad weighs 1.5 pounds and is7.47 inches wide and 9.56 inches tall, it is not your phone size and when holding it for long periods it does become heavy.

iPad has a 9.7 inch captive touch screen and technology for above average viewing angles, with a maximum resolution of 1024×768. The Apple processor is a 1GHz A4 and comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. With three storage choices in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB (not overly large to my thinking) with a battery usage at 10 hours. If you are looking to have a 3G network it is in the plans to come out in May.

iPad has the same apps as an iPhone like Safari web browser, email, photos, calendar, maps, YouTube, contacts, photos, notes, and iPod already installed. Existing apps are mostly compatible with the iPad and includes App Store and iTunes store plus a new iBook store. Work is in progress to bring out new apps for the larger iPad screen and higher resolution. Downloads are like the iTunes with audio books, movies, movie rentals, TV shows, podcasts, music, and iTunes. Some of the drawbacks are it is not light to hold for long periods. You have no multitasking or camera for video conferencing, and the keyboard is not as responsive as you would want.

Aside from these few things it has a fast response time, great screen resolution, and a great reader that is more like reading the book than digital. Time will tell if people are willing to buy another device between a smart phone and a book reader. With the touch screen and the high resolution you will be able to see animations with the text and enjoy the reading experience with younger children. If enough people are willing to pay the price for a better reader it may find its hold in the market and place pressure on Kindle readers, so what is going to be next in the reader wars?

If you are like me with a smart phone, home computer and a laptop where is this going to fit into your plans? Do we need the newest device to show and say we have one or is it truly worth the cost. If you have your laptop already (as of now you cannot do video conferencing) you are not going to replace it with the iPad if you need some of the features it does not have, but are promised to come later. But if it fills your needs for a reader and all of its apps it does look like it can be a good buy for you. And we feel it will take away a lot of sales from kindle readers because it is so versatile. But most of all the display gives you a great view and makes reading very easy.

In our opinion Apple Ipad wins hands down over amazons kindle.

  • iPad and Kindle Differences Revealed

    Savs Foster asked:

Technology on gadgets has been innovating every now and then to provide us with the coolest and up-to-date features. Electronic device manufacturers continue to amaze us with the fresh functionality features they always include in the new device they bring in the market. One excellent and reputable electronic device manufacturer is the Apple Co. which has been doing great in the business for many years. Mainly, for no reason to level with or even surpass the latest iPad by Apple, Amazon.com introduces its tablet application called Kindle. Here are some comparisons on both gadgets: iPad and Kindle. If you are planning to buy any of the two read on first to get a glimpse of what every gadget can provide you with.

    Screen Interface

iPad is the new and latest evolution of iPhone and works with the same screen interface. Thus, iPhone users get the advantage of being familiar with the new iPad screen functionality but with wider screen size. It has a colored and multi-touch screen functionality that gives users a broader and colorful experience with the gadget. On the other hand, Kindle has a screen size almost the same as the iPad’s. However, it’s black and white and comes with the traditional navigation buttons which is the outmoded counterpart of touch screen.

    Functionality

Kindle is basically intended for ebook readers where they can enjoy their reading hobby in one sleek device conveniently. This is a must-have device for ebook lovers alone, whereas, iPad goes beyond reading ebooks with its multi-functionality features. It supports various formats of ePub (electronic publication) and one of those is of Kindle’s. You can just swipe on pages conveniently while browsing. It’s more of a tablet computer-like where you can enjoy the same features laptops and personal computers have. In fact, it is somewhat an innovation of MAC laptop which is more portable and convenient to use for people on the go. You can enjoy browsing the internet, movies, and games and you get to enjoy same features of the iPhone gadget. iPad is more of an electronic buddy you can count on.

    The Apple Factor

Let’s admit it! Aside from the sophisticated features of iPad the reason why people prefer this over Kindle is the brand name of the company. Everyone is dying to have any gadget by Apple and as always the company never fails to satisfy its customers. It is one of the leading and innovative electronic device company committed to customer satisfaction.

    The Experience

With all the features of both gadgets mentioned above you can truly say which gadget provides an innovative experience. iPad is not a threat to Kindle as more reports about it is written. In fact, they must be credited for taking head in digitizing books although great comparison is being initiated between the two. Anyone can have his choice. If you prefer a gadget that’s limited to ebook then you can have the Kindle. But if you are more of an adventurous person in the world of technology and media then iPad is the best option.

  • Kindle Vs iPad – Will the iPad’s Novelty Put the Lights Out of the Kindle?

Posted on January 20th, 2011 No comments
    Travis Van Slooten asked:

Putting together a side-by-side Kindle vs iPad review, which device will likely prevail? No doubt about it, the Apple iPad, with its very recent much-talked about launch, is the “in” thing today. Hardcore Apple consumers can hardly wait to get their hands on one as the WiFi versions are expected to ship in late March, while the 3G models are arriving in April. When that time comes, we will no doubt see long lines in front of every Apple store as what happened with the release of the iPhone.

But what of the ebook readers like the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader? The e-reader has slowly become a mainstream consumer device, with the Kindle getting the bigger share of the consumer market. Seeing the potential however, many such ebook readers have also cropped up. But the entry of tablet PCs like the iPad which can also more than ably function as an ebook reader may shift the demand to multi-functional devices. Can the iPad really make a significant dent on the ebook reader industry? Let’s weigh the factors.

Starting with the negative, the iPad will be connected to Apple’s own e-book store. This makes sense for those who are still thinking of buying an ebook reading gadget, but if you already own a ton of digital books, you won’t be able to dump them into the iPad. Actual ebook prices are still to be confirmed but there’s talk that purchasing iBooks in the Apple e-book store is going to run you around $12.99 and $14.99. This can be a little pricey if you have to start from scratch. Plus, Amazon’s ebooks are still retailing at $9.99 apiece.

Still, getting an iPad has its own set of benefits as it’s a device that can serve a lot of functions. You will be able to use this big iPhone clone, sans the “phone” to watch high-def movies, TV, browse the web, and play games on a 9.7 inch IPS touch screen. Sticking with Apple standards, the clarity and color is amazing, and it comes with your choice of a 16-GB, 32-GB or 64-GB internal storage. Depending on your needs, prices start out at $499 and end at $829.

On the other hand, the Amazon Kindle is a device designed with the user’s most comfortable and convenient reading experience in mind. Unlike the LCD screen of the iPad, the Kindle is equipped with e-ink display, which many say, is still best for reading for longer periods of time. The Kindle’s battery can last up to two weeks without recharging, so it could also make the perfect traveling companion. The 6-inch model is priced at $259, while the 9.7-inch Kindle DX costs $489.

So which gets our thumbs up in this Kindle vs iPad comparison? Without a doubt, for the gadget geek, the iPad will fit perfectly alongside the MacBook Pro, AirPort Express, Magic Mouse and its smaller counter-part in looks, the iPhone. But for the bookworm just looking to read in the most conducive “environment” and don’t require all of the other stuff, the Kindle is still the best choice on the market today.
